Kendall County ARES has been asked to assist with communications for
the Kendall County Cares Clinic in Plano on May 21 between 8AM and
2PM. The clinic has been designed to help provide those in economic
need with various services and assistance that they might not
otherwise be able to afford. Churches, food pantries, government
agencies, medical facilities and businesses are coming together to
provide these services. More about the Clinic can be found here:
www.kendallcares.org.
We assisted with last year’s clinic, which was the first of its kind
in Kendall County. Event organizers had planned for 1000 attendees,
and got about a third of that, with a like number of volunteers. This
actually worked in everyone’s favor, as no one was really sure what to
expect. Organizers will be promoting the event more aggressively this
year, and since the economic climate hasn’t gotten much better, I’m
sure attendance will be higher.
Organizers are going to provide a light breakfast and some type of
lunch for the volunteers. All activity will take place on the grounds
of Plano High School, and our operations will be conducted on 2 meter
simplex. A portable with an extra battery should be all that's
needed. We'll need hams to be stationed in various locations, inside
and outside to act as points of contact for the volunteers and to
report emergency situations, and also a couple of hams to shadow key
event personnel.
Our comm plan calls for twelve operators, but we could always use more
help than that. One of the challenges we face is that this year’s
Clinic is on Dayton Hamvention weekend. So, if you’re not heading to
Ohio, and still need to get your ham radio “fix”, how about lending a
hand?
Dave Wright, KB9MNM, will be heading our efforts at the Kendall Cares
Clinic this year. Please contact him via email at kb9mnm at gmail if you
can assist.
Thanks.
