Kendall County ARES will again be providing communications and SAG
operations for the 3rd Annual Rolling on the River bike ride, held to
raise funds for three of Illinois' environmental charities. This
event has grown every year, and is now headquartered at the Kendall
County Fairgrounds in Yorkville. The ride, actually five routes
varying from 15 miles to 100 miles, wind throughout Kendall County and
into neighboring LaSalle County. The event is actually a three day
weekend with camping, kayaking and other activities planned. We are
still in need of several operators over the weekend, especially for
Saturday's main event, the bicycle ride.

We especially need hams to handle communications for a couple of the
rest stops and to act as SAG (support and gear) operators, patrolling
the ride route. The main hours of operation Saturday will be from
approximately 6:00 AM until 5:00 PM, but we can use help for even part
of the day. We've even got spots for a couple of phone operators
(ideal for unlicensed family members, etc), taking messages from event
staff and riders.

Event management has always treated us very well, with t-shirts and
goody bags for the volunteers, as well as a free meal on the day of
the ride and snacks and drinks at every rest stop. Free camping is
also offered to all the volunteers and their families. This year, the
camping is at Dickson Valley Campground in LaSalle County, where there
are many amenities and activities scheduled. Radio operators also
have the option of camping at the Fairground. Not quite as amenities
there, but its closer to town, and the pizza joint delivers….
