Do You Really Understand Receiver Performance Characteristics?
"Noise Floor", "Minimum Discernable Signal", "Total Harmonic Distortion".
How often have you heard these and other terms to describe receiver
performance, but not really understood them? Regardless of your level of
experience, you won't want to miss NSRC's May 13 program at the Heller
Nature Center in Highland Park.
Tuesday, May 13th, the North Shore Radio Club's featured speaker will be Art
Paton, N9AEP. Art's presentation will cover the key specifications related
to amateur transceiver performance and relate them to practical everyday
reception and transmission performance on the air.
Interpretation of the ARRL Product Reviews and Extended Reports will be
covered. Typical transceiver performance specifications from the last two
decades of amateur transceivers will be shown. It is likely your favorite
will be on the list! The presentation will explain trends in transceiver
design and why current offerings may not perform as well as older designs.
Transceiver selection options will be discussed for those contemplating a
future purchase.
Art Paton is responsible for advanced technology education for the Research
and Development Organization at Motorola. He is licensed as Amateur Extra
and enjoys operation on all bands chasing DX countries. He also operates
QRP and holds QRP-ARCI awards for over 1000 miles per watt for contacts to
Europe in CW and SSB modes. Art enjoys restoring older tube gear, and
building transceivers in tube, discrete, and surface mount technology. Art
teaches General license classes for the Schaumburg Amateur Radio Club and
chairs the education and net control committees for that club.
Please join us for coffee, cake, club camaraderie, and what promises to be
an excellent presentation at 7:30pm, May 13th, at the Heller Nature Center,
2821 Ridge Rd. in Highland Park (just west of 41/Half Day).
