"Thank you for the tech bulletin and suggestions, I will trace the 12
XDV line from the power connector through the radio. Will let you know
what I find."
I have done this a few times in the past, and found voltage inside the
radio, at a voltage that matches the source, however, I have found that
it's current that limits the ability for the radio to start on more than
one occasion, both from a damaged power supply that provided the proper
voltage, but at only a few mA, enough to read on a meter, but not turn
on the radio, and from the connector making just enough of a connection
to indicate proper voltage, but not enough of a connection to provide
adequate current at start-up, causing the radio to either cycle a few
times, then drop out as the connector heats and breaks contact, or shut
down within a fraction of a second after power-up.
Other issues that have been found... Bad fuses. They appear good, but
have either a hairline crack, or the element is broken at the cap, both
appearing good, but testing bad. Also, there was a bad run across
several suppliers to Amateur Radios in the late 90's, and early 2000's,
the the metal clip, inside the fuse holder, inline in the power cord,
being bad, specifically, loose, by a few thousandths of an inch. This
can cause erratic voltage readings, and low-current situations, causing
sudden power drop-out, or cycling.
Personally, I have never had a problem with the contacts on the head,
body, or cable, as once it's connected, it's sealed, and being
gold-plated, not an issue with corrosion. For those that pop things
open constantly, and probably not under the cleanest of conditions, I
imagine there is an extreme chance of their being an issue here, but not
if you are careful.
I have had multiple units of the 706 series, and not had the damaged
trace, or corrosion due to the rubber pad issue, it seems to have been a
narrow run that had this problem.
