I once spoke with one of the senior technicians at the ICOM repair facility
here in BC about repairing modern radios. He told me that they very rarely
actually replace faulty parts. It's just not worth the time to do the
troubleshooting. They have software that diagnoses the problem board and
that entire board is then replaced. He said one cannot afford for them to
take the time do do intensive troubleshooting at shop-rate prices. In
addition, if the offending part is identified, it may require the
replacement of additional parts due to them being ruined trying to remove
the bad one. It's just not worth it. Send it in and get it fixed properly.
