[ICOM] Wave Files not keying IC746 VOX

Mike,

VOX does not key the rig via the ACC input for sure. You must involve forced
PTT somehow.

N1MM (N1MM+) does provide PTT toggling, both as a radio command via CI-V and
a hardware one. I used to use the radio command with a ProIII and it worked
just fine. However my main TRX is IC-775DSP which does not provide PTT by
radio command. So I bought a PC extension card which gave me 2 more COM
ports + 1 LPT, and now I have plenty of ports to play with. The PTT is now a
hardware one, just the simple usual 1 transistor keying circuit.

My set-up works just fine for both Phone and RTTY messages provided via the
ACC audio input. It works for all, N1MM+, MixWin and Writelog, though at
this stage I use N1MM+ exclusively.

If you have all the pre-recorded messages ready along with PTT hardware
which works with other programs, you just have to play with N1MM+ settings.
Make sure:
- COM port settings are correct according to N1MM+ instructions
- in N1MM+ you initiate a log for a SSB or RTTY contest prior to start
experimenting
- you use proper F-key messages
- you use proper paths to audio files
- double check if no other program is launched before N1MM+. If MixWin was
turned on before N1MM+, it may grab the COM port for own use and block
access to the same port from other programs.

You may also check the N1MM+ documentation, especially
http://n1mm.hamdocs.com/tiki-index.php?page=Serial+Parallel+and+Sound+Card+I
nterfacing&structure=N1MM+Logger+Documentation .

Hope it helps.

Hello,

Thanks for all the help to get a wave file to play through the IC746 without
having to manually use the PTT on the IC746. So far all I'm starting to
agree, audio input to the radio via the accessory socket doesn't go thru the
VOX circuit.

A CQ wave file can be used through the accessory socket, pin 4, and drive
the radio to full output. However, have to press the "TRANSMIT" button
(PTT) on the front of the IC746 to get the radio to use the CQ wave file.
Wondering if N1MM+ provides a PTT when a wave file is triggered by a
function key?

If N1MM+ does generate a PTT command, have not been able to get it to the
radio. Tried different N1MM+ Config, Hardware com port combinations without
any success.

Do have the Icom Service Manual and Instruction Manual for the radio, but
haven't been able to definitely figure out if the accessory socket audio
input goes into the VOX circuit. Very convoluted schematic.

Not much information in either Manual regarding the VOX. All the VOX info
refers to the audio from the microphone. The only thing found in the
Manuals about the accessory socket audio input is the Input Impedance of 10
KOhms and Input Level of Approx. 100 mVolts rms.

Again, the wave audio input to the accessory socket pin 4 drives the radio
to full output when the PTT is manually actuated when the wave audio is sent
from the computer. One other input is the audio into pin 4 on the accessory
socket from another program, MixW2, for BPSK31 works fine, but
MixW2 does provide a PTT connection when the BPSK31 audio is provided by the
computer.

The wave files have been successfully used in the past with Writelog. I'm
not sure if Writelog provides a PTT command when a wave file is activated
though.
