No, it's not something other than one's own voice.

Phone contesters will often save their CQs and other passages as audio files for playback during a contest. 

It saves their voices from calling CQ for 48 hours, or however long the contest is. It is not unlike using the computer or a memory keyer for CW.

The typical format for such files can be .wav or .mp3 and the usual path is through the computer's sound card.

Please don't take offence at this question, but are there a lot of people here that unfamiliar with HF and contesting this comes as a surprise?
