Seems to me there was also a start-up voltage regulator that would give
trouble in some radios since the power switch is a soft switch. I could be
mistaken with the 706 series though.

Hello,
   Slide the head off the radio.  Use a pencil with a good clean eraser, and
erase the contacts clean on the radio and head.  Slide it back together,
should come right up.  I use to live 200 feet from the ocean in Southern
Florida.  This had to be done every week or two.  Had problems with any kind
of slide contact, IC706, IC756 (internal cables), PS molex plugs, you name
it. Couple months ago my 756Pro3 display went totally bonkers, totally
useless, just a bunch of jumbled colors.  Pulled the covers, wiggled the
display to main board cables, all fine and happy now.
 Live in NC now, but still fight with this every month or so, salt (in the
air) wrecks havic on these contacts.
