I use a similar method: take note of band noise S-meter reading. Step
the Rx attenuator to kill that reading (as low as possible, this depend
of how is your attenuator implemented).
Then with RF Gain control I set the S-meter needle to the previously
noted noise value. This way clears so much incoming signals.
Although I'm presently using a Kenwood TS-940S, in many Icom rigs I had,
by turning off the preamplifier is like if you insert an attenuator
(example: IC-720A).
