I have over the years been doing CW to get best results by adjusting my RF down to as low as possible and using my widest filter. ( not really do well, but doing it )
Just in the past few days I made contact with a ham and we discussed this very thing ( surprise I was doing it wrong !
What I had was both Pre Amps ON, then I was adjusting down the RF button down
I turned off the Pre Amps and now even sometimes, I turn on the ATT
( Attunator ) Now using the RF button and sometimes turning my medium or narrow filter, I can now get a very noisy CW signal to sound perfect.
Bottom line, turn off the Pre Amps, maybe turn on the Attenuator, then turn the filters on wide to narrow. Do not forget the pass band filters and the noise blanker.
Who says old hams can not learn new things I did.
