de WB2CPN Agn,
Using a cell phone while driving an automobile is illegal
in most places, but ham radio in your vehicle has not
been whacked, but it could happen. The compromise
centers around the image of the driver holding a
microphone, and listening to a speaker. Very simple,
does not require interaction by the driver, so ham radios
in our vehicles is still OK, but now on shaky ground.
A touch screen will take the driver's eye off the road,
and can be used only by looking at it. I've been a
licensed driver in many states, and for many years,
and I've experienced near-accidents by simple things
like adjusting the belt that holds my trousers up, and
digging through papers that are in the right seat, and
yelling at the kids which were in the back seat. A few
times I almost "Bought the Farm".
I can feel the buttons on the mic that I use with the
IC-7000, I don't have to take my eyes off the road,
and I feel safe that way. When I change channels on
the car's AM/FM radio I do it by listening, not by
looking.
What in the world is ICOM thinking? This new radio
of theirs is dangerous, so let the law suits begin.
You heard it here first. Somebody CC this little note
to ICOMAmerica.
Clete said that.
