[ICOM] UT-102 operation in IC-756Pro3 help

Hello all,
   Got a UT-102 in today, installed it in a IC-756ProIII.

Setup is:
   SPEECH Language         English
   SPEECH Speed              High (also tried LOW)
   SPEECH S-Level             ON

   I've found that hitting and holding the LOCK button for 2 seconds
generates the speech frequency reading.   Hitting a mode button to
change mode generates a speech mode reading.   Absolutely nothing I've
done generates the S-Meter speech reading.  Anyone have any ideal what
is going on?  The users manual is absolutely useless on this.  Cycling
the radio off and back on doesn't help any either.
   I had a IC-756ProII for a little while, it had several major
problems, so I returned it.   But, it responded very differently to
Speech request.   Anytime I hit a band key, it would speak the
frequency and mode.   Don't know if someone had done a special mod
somewhere to do this?   Maybe it was part of the cause of the radio
acting wierd part of the time?
   Any input would be appreciated on this.
