Another thing overlooked.
Peanuts
Not loose, fill a plastic grocery bag about 1/2 full and tie the handles 
together.
Makes a form fitting pillow. A bunch of these around the equipment in an 
inner box,
packing between inner and outer box of your choice. Someone mentioned wadded 
newspaper.
Personally I would use more of the pillows.
I have shipped some very heavy and delicate test equipment this way (FedEx 
Ground)
and never had a nut come loose.
Nice thing about the pillows they form fit to what ever you are shipping, 
distribute the weight evenly.
I am writing a pamphlet "Packing for Dummies". If I ever get it finished
will post it to the web.
