[ICOM] IC-718 antenna tuning and SWR

The CW mode was set to full break-in as per the manual. So am I correct that in CW mode with the PTT engaged the transmitter produces no carrier unless the electronic DIT or DAH key is pushed (which, by the way, doesn't require the PTT button)?

Yes that's right. When in CW mode pressing the Mic PTT button will have 
no effect. The IC-781 is expecting the closure of a CW Key at that 
point.. Generally those CW keys are attached to the jack in the rigs back.
So to make it easy use RTTY mode and press the PTT on the mic and read 
your swr.

Confirm that the output power is over 30 W.
Push [SET] one or more times to select the SWR
meter.
Push [MODE] one or more times to select CW or
RTTY operation.
•Key down or push [PTT] to transmit; then read the <- its an either / 
or, in CW press the CW key, in RTTY press the Mic PTT.
