Common problem in older Icoms. The main processor communicates with the 
display processor over a serial BCD bus, if I remember correctly. In 
time the electrolyte caps on the VCC bus dry out and become ineffective. 
  As a result, noise data gets into the display processor. The display 
processor, typical of older firmware, where every byte is precious due 
to memory limitations (we are talking 1980's here), any incorrect data 
hangs the display processor. A reset (power cycle) will usually clear 
it. The permanent fix to replace the defective electrolytes.
