I have owned an IC-706MKII for over 10 years and
never saw the screen turn dark grey. I don't think my car gets as hot as yours.
I do live in Washington and it doesn't get quite
as hot as other places except for the week of 100
degree weather we had in first week of August.
Rare for Seattle, I was done medium well ;)

I will say there is a limit to heat and
electronics operation. Likely at some point its
going to get to hot or to cold for the display to
always function but I can't remember ever seeing
one damaged for either. I have even seen my Fluke
77 move pretty slowly on the cold weather.
I do know my polarized sunglasses make it hard to
read the display on the 706MKII.

Yes the regulators are dropping 12 volts to
something like 5 volts which generates heat with the lost voltage.
