Hi, yes, the DSP was optional in the JA (G) radios. I bought mine in
Tokyo when they first came out. Another difference, due to the JA
bandplan, the radio only covers the bottom 1/2 of 2 Meters. I did the
SMT diode mod, and mine will now recieve the entire band but still will
not transmit on the top 2 MHz. NO ONE was able to give me a positive
answer as to why, but I suspect the USA and JA radios use different
processers......
That's fine, because:
a, I have a ton of 2M FM radios (remember when they were popular?)
b, I bought it for the SSB and CW capability.
By the way, options like the DSP, filters, etc, are about 1/2 the cost
in Japan as opposed to here in the USA. I put several in mine.....

I believe that DSP was optional in the JA version of the MKIIG.
