[ICOM] 500 kHz transceiver?

Hi Hans,
Nice-looking red-haired kid!
I see that PCH used many Siemens E311 receivers. I used one at the Siemens
club station in Munich, in 1987. That was one of the nicest tube receivers -
synthesised, with 100 kHz and (optionally) 1 kHz loops.
Back on topic: You could use your IC-7700 as a receiver on 500 kHz, in
conjunction with a separate homebrew or surplus transmitter. I also had a
look at the IC-7600 block diagram; the 1.6 MHz LPF in the shared BPF group
could theoretically be switched into the transmit signal path by modifying
the switching-diode control logic. This would deliver useful exciter output
on 500 kHz, but I am not sure how well the driver and PA would handle it.
Cheers for now, 73,
Adam VA7OJ/AB4OJ

Hello Mike,
I understand that for most of us it is just another band. For me this is
very different. In my professional time the 500 kHz was a very important
distress frequency. It is almost unbelievable that we will be able to use
such a frequency for ham radio; very very cool indeed!
Here you can see a photo of me from 1977 when I was operating the 500 kHz
during a night shift:
