[ICOM] WHICH TO CHOSE

Hi, I do not have a 765, but I do have it's earlier brother the 761. I
have over 50 receivers here and about 15 transceivers. The 781, sadly,
I also do not own.
However, having been an Icom fan since the early 1970s, I have too many
negative things about the 781, (in addition to MANY EXCELLENT things)
said about it.
I feel that years ago, we passed the point of 'diminishing returns'.
There is a limit to receiver sensitivity that we have NO control over.
Yes, the Hallicrafter S-120 is deaf as a rock, but
my SX-101 or my SX-117 (both recapped and aligned) will hear anything
my 761, 756 PRO, or R-390A can hear.
The BIG difference is, as has already been stated, is ease of use. I
could never again, imagine having a new radio without some type of band
scope!
For that reason alone (an the fact that PRO IIIs are priced right), may
be a reason to step up. Yes, then 781 parts will be harder to come by
as time marches on, but the same can be said about any solid state
radio.
I bought my 756 PRO just when they were announced, and I love it.
However, I MUST admit, I use only a fraction of it's functions. Not
that I don't know how or what they do, I'm just happy with it as it is.
Yes, the noise blanker is NO GOOD, but everything else is JUST what I
need. Like I said, my QTH is dead quiet (finally!!!).
I would LOVE the opportunity to put my PRO next to the latest offering
and hear what difference (if any) I could detect on 6 Meters (weak
signal).
I live in a very quiet area, and my PRO can 'hear' the antenna.....
One last suggestion, whatever you decide, keep the radio cool. I have a
cooling fan in every radio I own and NEVER suffered a heat related
failure....
HAVE FUN and gud luk!

Hell there!
I have the legendary Icom 765 which was set to Icom about 5 years ago
for
upgrade and mods. I like it very much and plan not sell it. However, I
am
thinking of buying either the 756 PRO III or the Icom 781, and to date,
could
not decide which one to go for. One electronic engineer said that the
781 is to
complex and complicationg to repair, but that is only one aspect. Can
those, who
had the chance of using both or read things on the 2, subscribing to
this
e-group contribute your opinions on the topic? Thank you and 73.
