Just a "caveat emptor"...

Some of the older Icoms are fussy about the interface and won't work 
reliably with some of the inexpensive interfaces. I've seen where a 
cheap interface works perfectly with a IC781 or IC820 but won't work 
with an IC726 or IC751A. I'm sure that you might have issues with the 
old IC761 ( uses the EX309 like the 751A)... but I think the IC765 uses 
the same interface as the 735 or 781 so you might be OK. The sure bet is 
use the C-IV or a clone that uses a true RS232 converter chip such as 
the MAX232 family... otherwise verify the the unit has actually been 
tested with older Icoms or at least the vendor has a return policy.
