John,
It depends on the rig and mic. Most late model Icom radios use Electrix mic
and as such the computer mic is well suited. I use a computer headset/mic on
my IC-735 for mobile operation in my Motorhome. It interfaced without any
extra circuitry.
I made an audio adapter that accommodates the computer mic/headset
connectors and the output to a standard ICOM 8 pin connector. You can make
this using two line connectors out the back of the standard 8 pin connector.
That way you do not need to mess with the Headset/mic cabling
I use a standard foot switch laying near my left foot. VOX also works, if
you prefer it. I have a foam wind cover on the mic to reduce the noise level
attendant with mobile operation.
I have a homebrew audio interface box in the shack that accommodates the
isolated audio interface for Digital programs. I have also included
appropriate connectors in the same box to accommodate the computer
headset/mic combination. Since the FT-920 is setup for a dynamic mic, I use
the 8v available on the mic connector to provide power for the Electrix mic
element.
