I doubt Icom even makes their ICOM branded microphones. They
probably source from a real microphone manufacturer,,,, like Heil
does. Icom probably spends their resources making radio sets ....
their speciality. Bob knows how to sell. (IMHO)
So now you have the mic manufacturer, ICOM and the dealer all adding
markups ...along the way.
As far as after market warranties....I agree that a radio after a few
hundred days SHOULD have few failures. But when my 7800 stopped
turning on .... o crap $#@$
I was thrilled I had HRIA insurance.
Been in the audio business since the 60s also....still am ...both
consumer then commercial & "pro" audio .... as far as 3rd party
warranties.... I doubt Best Buy could survive without those profit
dollars. The used to be tremendous pressure on the employees to sell
those....doubt that has changed. They would almost GIVE the product
at cost IF they could get the "psp" insurance.
I loved it when the long gone Highland Appliance tried to sell me a
$60 warranty on a 100$ dehumidifier. Best Buy used to announce the
Insurance sales numbers , on the hour , for each department.... now
that is pressure....
They made it sound like they were paging different departments...
when it was really
the INSURANCE sales numbers.
