Thanks for the reply Gary.  No, the S meter is at rest on the left side of 
the meter face ... ZERO signal showing.  As soon as I bang on the 20 meter 
button, the audio comes alive.  Had a reply from a fellow with a 761 that had the 
same issue with audio ... his was in the T/R relay and cleaning it fixed the 
problem.
 
As for the display, I suspect lowered voltage but I haven't been inside the 
box yet.  We'll see.  It could also be the result of some rough handling in 
shipment from Orlando to Fort Wayne.
