No, the referenced outboard DSP unit, the Timewave DSP-599ZX, only goes in
the final audio line, not in front of it - it can't help with overblown AGC
issues. It does help on weak signals in the noise, static crashes,
repetitive noise like ignition and separating out CW signals using a very
narrow bandwidth. It does not help when strong adjacent signals cause the
AGC to attenuate the desired one. This can only be cured in the front end
of the receiver. In other words, I would only need an external DSP for
older receivers not of the caliber of the IC765, IC-775 or IC-781. That
said, I find my much older Timewave DSP-9 somewhat useful with my Kenwood
TS-870 to improve intelligibility of SSB, rather than using the built-in
DSP.

It never occurred to me to put a DSP in front of my 781. Does it make much
difference?
