Thanks to all of you that responded, both here, and privately. The
answer to #2 was the NB being on. My regular rig is the 7000, and I
never turn the NB off. It never ocurred to me. Thanks for that tip.
Kevin, k8SU, sent me great photos and how-to's to fix the encoder.

So I still have to deal with the frequency alignment, but I think I
will just try to adjust C138, as the 735 User Manual suggests.
