OK let me try and say it in terms that can't be confused.  There was no
typo.
If your amp only uses 240 vac single phase you only need a three wire
plug ... hot(red), hot(black) and ground(green).
If your amp uses both 120 vac and 240 vac then you need or should use a
four wire plug hot(red), hot(black), neutral(white) and ground(green).
The 120 vac will be taken from one of the hot(red or black) -
neutral(white) combinations.
In the past there were some short cuts taken in a three wire 240 vac
where the 120 vac was taken from one of the hot(red or black) and
ground(green) - not recommended!
This has nothing to do with regular 120 vac house wiring.

Doug, I think you made a typo - 4 wire for 240 VAC and 3
wire for 120 VAC.
