This theory has been through exhaustive testing on the 781. No appreciable improvement was realized
by using a variac on the line power. The dropping resistor still gets hot as does the rest of the
radio and the reg board still fails if not properly rebuilt and cooled.

If it is true that the power supply were designed to operate on
100VAC@ 50Hz, then it might behoove users to employ a Variac
or fixed ratio step-down transformer to safely power the 781.
