Fifteen or so years ago, when I was shopping for a communications receiver I 
remember a modification to add shortwave reception to the R7000. I almost 
purchased one for that reason. I went with the IC-R7100 / IC-R72 (twins) and 
I am glad I did. They are still going strong. Anyway, not having the R7000 I 
have forgotten the details of the modification. Google may be of some help.

Today, it may be just as cheap and easy to pick up an R71x.
