[ICOM] IC2KL Two questions

Hi Martin,
To answer your questions:
1. Don't even think about using the IC-2KL without ALC. The ALC line is the
amplifier's first line of defence. Operating it without ALC will put those
irreplaceable 2SC2652's at risk of destruction.
If you are using an Icom exciter, the ALC line is already in the control
cable, so all you need to do is adjust the ALC pot on the rear panel as per
the 2KL user manual. For other exciters, connect the ALC via the RCA jack on
the rear panel. You can download the user manual here:
http://www.qsl.net/icom/manuals.html
See also: http://www.ab4oj.com/qadra/sshfamp.html#11
2. The IC-2KL does not require alignment unless a major repair has been
performed such as replacement of the RF power devices (2SC2652). The
protection circuits will be ineffective unless the ALC is properly connected
and adjusted.
Cheers for now, 73,
Adam VA7OJ/AB4OJ

Subject: [ICOM] IC2KL Two questions
Hi,
I have two questions about the IC2KL amplifier.
I normally use a tube amplifier with a solid state exciter. As a result I do
not use an ALC connection between the amplifier and the radio preferring to
set the rigs output power control to a suitable level to drive the
amplifier. Icom seems to be quite emphatic about the need for an ALC
connection from the IC2KL amplifier and I have heard mention elsewhere that
it is considered a must with the PW1. I am interested to hear what people
are doing if using a 2KL.
Second question concerns 2KL alignment. I have a copy of the AB4OJ and K9NX
procedure and presume that is all that is required. I do not have an Icom
service manual for the 2KL. How will the lack of an ALC connection impact
the protection and power setting process?
