While In Combat Communications with the AF I saw a lot of static discharge from Tactical Fiber Optic Cables at night during a sand storm. The cables terminated in our facility, a later update to the cables was to upgrade the connectors to pickup the common ground at the tactical modem. The modems were upgraded to shielded cases also. We did that upgrade locally.

I suspect the bad stuff came in elsewhere as the fiber- optic,,,,
should not be conducting anything... copper yes, fiber no...
any experts out there.
