Don't confuse the SM-5 with the SM-6. The SM-5 was designed for the
720, 730, 740 Series and had tons of mic gain especially if connected
to a newer rig like the 756PROIII.. The SM-6 will work with the 745
up to the current models like the IC-756PROIII with no adverse
effects. Yes the SM-6 does have a gain adjustment but it sports no
where near the gain the SM-5 had. The SM-6 will not properly drive
the old Icoms, 720, 730, 740 series that had needed the higher mic
amplifier gain.

Where the SM-5 will overdrive the newer Icoms. Though I have in the
past specified one of those of the person spoke very softly. Had a
guy years ago with an IC-725 who spoke just above a whisper, had him
purchase an HM-7 and heard back from him about glowing audio reports.
Now my voice on an IC-725 and HM-7, well I could not crank down the
mic gain low enough.
