I may be wrong but all LED R9000s sold in the USA are NOT cell blocked and 
that is why they stopped selling them in about 1996, by law. Then the 9000L 
came out which WAS cell blocked. If you have the LCD later version "L" then 
you are blocked. Some detest the later model and swear by the earlier model, 
as I do. I do not like the LCD contrast. So, when you see an ad, it should 
say R9000 or 9000L to clarify the different production changes. Inside, they 
are virtually the same radio, so says Icom people I talked to back in the 
early 2001.
