Yes I don't know why they chose to do it that way either. I don't know
of any of their other rigs that function that way. Although I've heard
it stated that every SSB signal should have some compression to enhance
its readability. I believe Adam has an article on his Icom site about
it. Good luck with the radio and if you know someone who is looking for
another one my friend wants to sell his. It has all the accessory
modules with it.

Hi Julio:
          I understand your point of operating with the compression off
and reducing mic gain to lower power out and will experiment with that
to see how it works.  I am new to the radio and thus unfamiliar with the
controls, simple as they may be.  Would seem to be better if it had a
separate push button for the compression and the power control set in a
linear fashion like the rest of my radios.
