Doug: It is possible but unusual that yourSM 20 electret mike element is defective. I woild first verify the wiring to be correct and not broken. Here is a site that gives the wiring for most ham rigs and mikes. http://homepage.ntlworld.com/rg4wpw/date.html . If by chance your element is actually bad, you can substitute a PC board electret element from Radio shack for about $3. I use one on my rig, and I get excellent audio reports. Larry K4LXV.
