Paul, when you start talking about this subject
without using instruments/numbers, it get very
subjective. First, we have to establish some
benchmarks. What band and time of day are you working.
Before spending big $$, you should be sure the noise
isn't coming from your immediate environment.
I see that you do have other radios to compare so I
would say that if it is as bad as your first sentence
says, there is something wrong with the receiver that
can be repaired. That should be done before more
add-ons.

In closing, I'll relate this to you about the 706mk2g
- in general. I have a 746pro and a 706mk2g sitting
side by side. I have a regular schedule with some old
friends several nights a week on 75m - a very noisy
place at time. Now I'm not going to say the 706 is as
quiet as the 746 all time but it serves me well most
of the time and I do kick in the 1.9 filter at time.

I just had some work done on the 746pro by a fellow up
in Maine and he did a great job at resonable prices
with good turnaround. You otta'call him and have a
chat. Mike Nadeau, N1EQ
His web page is: N1EQ.COM

best of luck to you
Tom, W3TMC
