[ICOM] Pro series, portabilty, and more (was: re: info needed please)

Hi Renee,

Rule #1: Never take your own radio to Field Day so that some careless op can
spill coffee or beer into it.

The TFT display in the 756Pro series appears to be very reliable; I have
never heard of a complete failure, although there have been rare instances
of lines on the screen. The technology is the same as that used in computer
displays, and is thus well-proven. I would not consider the TFT an obstacle
to purchase; I have owned all 3 756Pro models since 2000 (currently have the
Pro3), and my former Pro and Pro2 are still chugging along (as is my
venerable IC-756, now with its 3rd owner).

There is a lot of information about the 756Pro series on my Icom page:

Cheers for now, 73,
Adam VA7OJ/AB4OJ

Hi Adam and all,
Yes, I think maybe, for now at least, I will hang onto the 775. Altho
selling it and getting something newer then those other radios I mentioned
may be nice to do at some time too. Like sell in and get a 756 Pro maybe. My
only worry about those kinds of radios is if the display ever goes out. Has
this happened with the Pro series? How long, typically, should such a
display last? Is there a source for spares? It would also be nice to get a
smaller back up radio too. With Field Day just around the corner, I am
reminded of how nice it is to have something smaller and portable too. Kind
of hard to lug a 775 to Field Day, nor would I want to expose such a radio
to the elements either.
What is everyones thoughts on this?
73,
Renee NZ9T
