Regarding the UT-106 AF-DSP (built-in) option for the IC-706 MK II G.
My experience -- it's the worst piece of garbage sold as an Icom accessory.
It's supposed to do noise reduction. But, as I adjust the DSP level
from 1 through 15,
the amount of distortion gets progressively worse, with only a nominal
effect on
removing the impulse noise. Pure rubbish.
That's why I turn off the Icom AF-DSP, and put in the ClearSpeech DSP.
Pure heaven. It wipes out the static hash, impulse noise, etc and tames it.
It might not eliminate it 100%, but I'd say it usually wipes out at
least 50%, and
as much as 85%. The Icom can only wipe out 15% of the hash while distorting
the voice so bad, you'ld swear the Mode switch changed from USB to LSB on
20 meters. Makes pure CW tone sound like mush.
Of course, mines could be an isolated manufacturing incident, but I am so
disappointed by it -- that I am very, very disappointed. I'm curious if
others have had that experience.
I used a friend's Timewave DSP. All it did was change the tonality of the
audio passband. Didn't seem to do much impulse noise reduction.
The ClearSpeech? Simple. On, and off. That's it. It's inline and works,
or its out of line and you get your normal audio. They had a demo at
Dayton 2003, with a CD player playing a recording of live QSOs.
You could switch that DSP on and off to hear the difference.
Too bad the original mfg discontinued it, and Heil had troubles with it.
Supposedly, West Mountain Radio previewed their new ClearSpeech
DSP speaker at Dayton 2007 with 4 settings, due out in July.
Priced under $200, if I remember correctly. Ran out of plastic because
Gary convinced me to get the IC-910H, so didn't try it out.
Can anyone vouch for the IC-7000 IF-DSP under horror story
on-the-air conditions?
