Hi Graham,

As I recall, another advantage of the IC-740 is that its synthesiser runs at
HF and its output is divided down. This will greatly reduce close-in phase
noise.

Folks, I have seen mentioned a mod for the IC740 and other similar rigs,
that provides a "wetting" current flow through the relay contacts to ensure
the contacts remain clean and serviceable. I cannot find this mod in the
usual places. Would someone please direct me to the appropriate site. I have
just obtained a fully loaded IC 740 and are gob-smacked at the receive
performance....it takes a very expensive late mod rig to come even
close.....I reckon it proves the point that tight "ham bands only" filtering
with the consequent need for only a low output PLL makes for a very quiet
and effective receiver.
