[ICOM] DC Power Connector Help

Dick is right. Some months ago I reported to the list a problem I had
with some after market cables and plugs I bought from a vendor at a
hamfest that were labeled as Icom power cables. While the body of the
plug matched the Icom plug on the back of the radio. A 756 PII BTW. The
pins were a different size. This caused arcing of the high current to
the rig which in turn caused intermittent operation and caused the plug
to char and melt. After I realized what was happening I was able to
remove the pins and using a small pair of long nose pliers re-shape the
pins to make a snug fit. I haven't had any problems since with that
particular plug.
Bottom line is to be careful what you buy that doesn't come from Icom
since Icom is apparently using some off sized pins in their connectors.

I believe that ICOM (and other manufacturers) do not use Molex plugs,
but
one from a different vendor that is not compatible with Molex plugs.
There are a lot of "replacement" plugs out there that are close, but not
exactly the same. The result is often overheating as the pins make less
than optimum contact.
You can buy the exact replacement plug and pins from ICOM for a very
very
reasonable price or the entire cable if you don't want to be bothered
with
building one, but this is not a good area to try to save a few bucks.
Call
ICOM parts and ask for the parts--it is a request they are very familiar
with.
