I find that the IIG is close to ideal in a car with a 'lame' antenna. As the 
antenna system gets more efficient, the rig is a bit too sensitive. My rig 
definitely sees the difference between my SGC and the AH4 with 20 feet of 
whip (my  usual setups) and a simple hamstick, which almost seems like a 
better match for the rig...  Out of the car, on an effective antenna, forget 
it. Not only do you need the attenuator in, but you really need decent 
filters, too.

Realistically, the rig is superb in the role for which it was designed, and 
for the time that it was designed.

I'm dying to try out an IC-7000 under the same conditions!
