Ok Mac, here is the adjustment for the 703 if you are willing to try it.
I don't have mine to try it on but I am reasonably sure this is it.
Remember to set the radio volume to your normal listening level before
making the speech level adjustment. You will need to adjust R7205 to the
desired level. R7205 is located on the main board. You will see the
outline of the optional filter. It is to the left of the bottom left
corner of the filter outline. You will see "CP 1851" silk screened on
the board. R7205 is just to the left of this . Schematic wise it is in
the 703 svc manual part 2, page 16, on the bottom left of the page .
This svc man pdf I got from www.mods.dk
I always mark the starting point of my adjustment before turning
anything, even if I am 100 percent sure. Fine point markers work well.
If you are willing to do this , please let me know how it worked out. If
not then we can wait till I get mine back or someone else tries it. I
think I found the adjustment for the 706MK2 also. It looks like the
beep/sidetone adjustment on the side of the case will do it. Not
positive, but I have to look at my paper copy as the pdf is not the
best . I'll get back on this one. 73..Rick.
