I will say that my 706 original (I started this
thread) will receive the broadcast band FM ok on wide
FM mode.  Forgot to mention that in my original post. 
Not sure it that helps anyone diagnosing problems. 
And it will receive on 2m at a very low level.  I
could hear the local repeaters very lightly, and one
APRS signal on 144.39 did come booming it at S7 or so.
