Hi Dick,

My choices, for your target price, for base station backup would be:

1. A well maintained IC-765, or

2. A IC-756Pro or possibly ProII, or

3. A IC-746 Pro.

But which one?

If your primary interest is HF-SSB, go with the '765. (With INRAD
filters and its RF speech processor, it is a great SSB radio. It is
far from shabby on CW, either. The front panel ergonomics are superb.)

If you are more of a CW op go with the 'Pro or 'ProII. (I notice
little difference between the Pro and ProIII on CW, much more on SSB)
This would offer the advantage of short learning curve, too.

If you want to work weak signal modes on 6 and 2 meters, and have a
backup HF radio, go with the '746Pro.

73 and let us know what you decide,

Blair K3YD

Subject: [ICOM] Backup ICOM Radio

I am looking for an ICOM HF transceiver as a base station backup for my
IC-756 Pro III.

I would like to stay under $1500. My first thought was a new IC-746
Pro, but then I started thinking about all of the used 761, 781, 775
radios out there (which I know absolutely nothing about).

So I guess my questions boils down to this: what is the best (in terms
of performance and reliability) ICOM HF transceiver I can buy, new or
use, for $1500 or less?

All suggestions and discussion appreciated.

73, Dick
