Other than WD-40 NOT being a lubricant, it works.  How long, dunno.  The WD
in WD-40 stands for Water Displacer.  Eventually it turns to gum as the
solvent evaporates.  Also - the propellant is highly flammable, so be
careful there too.  Our company does not allow WD-40 around any switch-gear.

I would recommend a good lubricant.  Try some Tri-Flow - oil with PTFE.  Or
if you can find it, lube the shaft lightly with Super-Lube.  Super Lube is a
silicone-base PTFE grease.  I use it on my competition and self-defense
weapons.  It lubes well, withstands heat, and does not collect dust.  In
fact - my son uses it on his sniper rifle.  He was decorated for over 200
combat missions last tour.  Guess you can't get a more glowing report than
that.  If it is good enough for a combat sniper, it should hold up well for
even the fastest ICOM tuners available!  <grin>
