Insulator is ceramic what i have removed from old commercial power supply. I
think that all insulator what endure heat can use. Remember insulate
transistor from metal box by using properly materials.
I think that there is no reason keep display bright if change this
transistor better which last current better than original SMD one.

My IC-746Pro display brightness is pretty low because it is especially at
nigth too bright.
Display bulb is cold cathode so i dont think that bulb not goes bad even
though it keep low brightness.

Thanks Mark for the info & your mod on the fix. Is the insulator you are
using plastic? I have seen the thin piece of insulator that comes with
transistor, but not one of this kind.

Also is it wise to keep the brightness pretty high to produce less current
on the transistor? I have seen others on the groups.yahoo.com say this, but
was wondering if this was wise to do. I figured it would shorten the life
of the display bulb, but not for sure if that is true.
