Thanks Mark for the info & your mod on the fix.  Is the insulator you are using plastic?  I have seen the thin piece of insulator that comes with transistor, but not one of this kind.

Also is it wise to keep the brightness pretty high to produce less current on the transistor?  I have seen others on the groups.yahoo.com say this, but was wondering if this was wise to do.  I figured it would shorten the life of the display bulb, but not for sure if that is true.
