[ICOM] IC-PW1 - Problem - any advice or ideas?

Hi Tony,

Here are some comments by my friend Jay W5JAY, to whom I forwarded some of
the posts on this topic. Jay repaired his own PW1.

I wanted to add an observation that when one of the PW1's modules goes bad,
the PA fans will cycle on and off. Without trying to drive the amp or key
it, just watch the temp meter. As it goes up it will turn on the three PA
fans because the damaged FETs are drawing more current than usual. You can
find the affected FETs by putting your finger near the top of them. The
other three will be stone cold, but the bad ones will be very warm! You
don't have to touch the bad ones to know they are indeed bad! The heatsink
is so good it can deal with the bad FETs current draw and heat with no
problem. Although a skilled ham can change these out, it is a very scary
thing to do since the PW1 is built like a jewel box on the inside. A good
digital camera is a very nice tool to have if one is contemplating this, not
to mention the service manual. This is not your granddaddy's amp! :-)

Jay, many thanks for your input.

Cheers for now, 73,
Adam VA7OJ/AB4OJ

Adam,

Thanks for the additional insight. What I have noticed is as the tuner is
working it apparently increases power as the tuner completes its work. I
assumed that this was a normal process in completing the auto tuning
procedure. Well anyway thanks for all the professional advice.

Tony
