David KA0JON et all,
Yes you are correct. The SM-6 was designed for the older Icom rigs with low
audio ouput like the IC-735, etc. and has to much gain for the IC-718.
However the output pot. on my SM-6 is turned all the way CCW until I just
get some audio output. Still with the SM-6 desk mic pot. turned way back and
the rig mic gain at 30 on a scale from 00-100, I get poor audio reports of
over processed audio with the speech processor on.

However carefully setting the desk mic and rig mic gain controls for little
ALC movement to get good audio reports is a band aid approach, when the real
issue is that the RF speech processor setting from the factory is set to
high at +12 db of compression, when +6db should be the max.

I have looked carefully at my copy of the service manual, schematics and
have also now popped the rig covers but can't find the adjustment pot. for
the speech processing level. Heck it may not exist, though the Icom website
said that it is user adjustable.

In any event I appreciate all of the the responses to my original query.
When I find the answer to the dilemma I will let everyone know.

SM-6 desk mic. There's your problem.

The SM-6 desk mic has alot more output gain than the IC718 needs.
It was made for the old rigs like IC-745 that needed more output
gain. If you put your HM12 Hand mic back on the rig and setup your
mic gain so you have a little ALC movement, THEN hookup
the SM-6 mic turn the Pot on the bottom of the mic all the way off
and then turn it up just a little.

The SM-6 just has to much gain. I know Been there done that.

However a SM-10 Desk mic has less output than the SM-6 for the
718. I tried SM-6 Mics both on The IC718, and the Original IC-706
and if you want good audio turn that pot down on the SM-6
(Almost off) and everyone will give you good reports.
