[ICOM] Mic gain on the 706 MKIIG

Far be iut from me to dispute Cliff's well known
knowledge and experience, BUT:

If deviation is set at 5 kHz (or whatever is desired)
adjustment downward of the mic gain will not cause
any change in the deviation until that mic gain is
dropped to the point where limiting is NO LONGER
occurring.

This is a similar condition to that which was common
in years past regarding use of packet TNCs with 2m and
other FM transceivers. To get the best data transfer
one needed to have maximum deviation of the rig
set to 5 kHz (or just a slight bit lower) for voice use
and then set the TNC output to give 3.5 kHz peak
deviation with both tones running. The same basic
criterion holds true for setting DTMF mic tones.

Distortion MUST be avoided to ensure proper
detection of the tones.

I would,

1. Check the current deviation as specified in the SM
2. Adjust to spec.

If still too hot due to voice characteristics then adjust down.

I will check distortion on a 1KHz tone as I change the mike gain and see
what happens. The deviation didn't change.
