OK...I guess my definition of "out-of-the-box" (OFTB) needs a bit of
clearing up. By OFTB, I generally mean that the function is documented
in the manual and that there are no special/undocumented keystrokes
required to access the mode.
The 2410A doesn't require any "modding" for cross-band repeat, but does
require a key/button press combination that I don't think is documented
in the owner's manual (though there is a tech info sheet from Icom that
shows how it's done). I believe the same is true with the 2710H and the
W32A. For reference, I have all three of these radios as well as a W2A
- great rigs, but I've never really used the cross band repeat feature
on any of them.
Anyways...this conversation is getting a bit long.

My old reliable IC-2410's crossband repeated right out of the box making
them extremely valuable for field EMCOMM use. I guess that's why I
ended
up with five of them (that I still have). There are operational issues
involved with any crossband repeating, but the IC-2410 held up their
technical side very well.
